Throughout June, UnitedHealth Group and its UnitedHealthcare and Optum businesses are celebrating lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) pride. In response to the COVID-19 health crisis, the enterprise will continue to practice social distancing while celebrating LGBTQ Pride Month in a responsible way.
“I’m proud to work for an organization that reinforces the importance of an inclusive and diverse workforce even during difficult times,” said Ryan Craig, chief talent officer, UnitedHealthcare. “Now, more than ever, strengthening the sense of community among our LGBTQ+ employees and allies makes the company stronger and reflects our steadfast values.”
Pride Month Virtual Rainbow Run
UnitedHealth Group is proud to be a premier sponsor of Minnesota’s Twin Cities Pride Rainbow Run — a signature component of the month’s festivities. Traditionally an in-person experience, the event in 2020 will be a virtual 5K run/walk for members of the local community as well as UnitedHealth Group, UnitedHealthcare and Optum employees across the U.S. Between June 20-27, registered participants will be invited to log their time with the race app and post pictures to social media using the tags #UHGPride and #TCPride2020.
Engaging Team Members in Pride Month Activities
In addition to the Rainbow Run, UnitedHealth Group has planned a variety of activities for employees throughout Pride month, including a Pride podcast. The podcast features a roundtable of dynamic team members discussing their experiences as members and/or advocates of the LGBTQ+ community and what it means to be out and proud.
LGBTQ Equality
UnitedHealth Group is committed to creating an inclusive and diverse environment for team members, customers, communities and partners. For the second year in a row, the company has earned a perfect 100% rating as one of the best places to work for LGBTQ equality in the Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s 2020 Corporate Equality Index (CEI).
The 2020 CEI rating underscores UnitedHealth Group’s commitment to inclusion and diversity, noted Patricia Lewis, chief human resources officer for UnitedHealth Group. “The unique life experiences of our 325,000 employees — and their differences — are one of the greatest assets we bring to the millions of people we serve every day.”
LGBTQ Pride Month
LGBTQ Pride Month marks the promotion of self-affirmation, dignity, equality and visibility of the LGBTQ+ people as a social group. Celebrated each year in the month of June, Pride Month honors the 1969 Stonewall uprising in New York’s Greenwich Village neighborhood of Manhattan, New York. The riots are widely considered a pivotal point to the gay liberation movement and the modern fight for LGBTQ rights in the United States.
