UnitedHealth Group’s Diverse Team Responds to COVID-19

The coronavirus pandemic has dramatically changed the health care landscape since UnitedHealth Group released its last earnings report three months ago. But in uncharted times such as these, UnitedHealth Group’s 325,000 diverse team members across the globe are leading the fight against COVID-19, helping people live healthier lives and helping make the health system work better for everyone. 

On the front lines of care, UnitedHealth Group has assembled a team of 120,000 doctors, nurses, medical assistants, social workers, pharmacists and other health care workers. These front-line health care workers collaborate with our 45,000 customer care professionals and 35,000 data scientists across the United States — and in Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Peru and Portugal.

OptumCare, our physician-led, patient-focused approach to care, operates as the physician partner of choice and extends UnitedHealth Group’s reach across the nation—with more than 6,500 clinicians added this year alone. These clinicians join OptumCare because they are seeking alignment with the entity best equipped to help doctors move to high-performing accountable care models. OptumCare also shifted more than 14,000 physicians to telehealth visits that would otherwise be canceled. Meanwhile, 700 additional advance practice clinicians were also deployed to serve on telehealth lines.

UnitedHealth Group also partnered with several state governments and employers, who used our Optum rapid response resources to stand up mobile and fixed COVID-19 testing sites. To date UnitedHealth Group has helped conduct more than a half million tests across more than 500 sites, most often in rural and underserved communities.
