UnitedHealth Group is committed to ensuring the future health care workforce is equipped to meet the needs of patients across the country by:  

• Helping to build a more diverse health care workforce.
• Expanding the number of health data analysts and technologists.
• Providing career skills training and reintegration support to transitioning active duty service members.
   

Advancing a Diverse Health Care Workforce

Through partnerships, grants and scholarships, UnitedHealth Group is working to help build a health workforce that reflects our society and increases the number of primary care providers equipped to deliver personalized care.

• Through the Diverse Scholars Initiative, the United Health Foundation has provided $23 million in assistance to fund nearly 3,000 scholarships for diverse undergraduate and graduate students.
• In 2019 alone, 227 undergraduate and graduate scholars across 44 states received financial support and mentoring to pursue academic studies that will lead to careers as primary care professionals.
   

Through a five-year, $3 million partnership with the University of Nevada, Las Vegas School of Medicine (UNLV SOM), the United Health Foundation is helping prepare students to serve the area’s diverse population. Through the partnership, UNLV SOM has developed an innovative curriculum to better prepare medical students for primary care careers, and the first class of 60+ students will graduate from the School of Medicine in 2021.

Expanding the Number of Health Data Analysts and Technologists

UnitedHealth Group is collaborating with leading universities to expand the number of health data analysts and technologists through philanthropic grants, strategic partnerships, and experiential learning opportunities. 

UnitedHealth Group and its foundation have invested more than $12 million to expand health data analytics learning opportunities for university students and working professionals.

United Health Foundation efforts include:

• Launching a new annual health informatics summer “boot camp” experience at UNC-Chapel Hill to introduce undergraduate students from nearby Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) to health informatics principles and promote health informatics careers.
  
• A United Health Foundation partnership with Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute focused on lowering the entry barriers to health analytics for students from biology or mathematics backgrounds and promoting greater gender diversity.
  
• Exposing business school students at the University of Minnesota to health data analytics through a partnership providing new curricula and experiential learning opportunities.

UnitedHealth Group efforts include:

• A partnership with the Atlanta University Center Consortium (AUCC), the oldest and largest consortium of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), to develop a new data analytics program, the AUCC Data Science Institute. The institute will serve as a national data science research and education hub focused on increasing minority graduates in data science – with a goal of 100 students graduating each year with a data science major or minor by 2024 (to double to 200 per year by 2029).
