Grow your tech career

Careers don’t always move in straight lines, especially in technology. Skills evolve. Interests shift. New opportunities appear.

At Optum, part of the UnitedHealth Group family of businesses, growth is part of our culture. We encourage our technology professionals, and all employees, to keep learning, explore what’s next, and grow into roles that match their skills, goals and aspirations.

Our employees are building careers through hands‑on experience, internal learning platforms, AI-driven applications, and mobility tools that make growth practical and accessible.

“There has been a ton of development available to me [that has] really helped move me forward.”

A culture built on learning

Learning is fundamental to how we work.

“The culture is essentially learning and innovation,” said Sujata S. Through ongoing development and embracing new challenges, Sujata advanced from organizational consultant in 2013 to her current role as principal architect.

That culture shows up in everyday tools and experiences.

“We have an internal learning platform that provides courses on not only data analytics and AI skills that are relevant to me as a data specialist, but also softer skills such as conflict resolution [and] cross‑functional team leadership,” notes Neci.

This blend of technical and professional development helps employees grow in ways that support their current roles — and prepare them for what’s next.

Learning that adapts to your goals

Growth looks different for everyone. Some feel ready for a change while other team members want to deepen their expertise in their current role.

For Aideen C., a data scientist, access to learning and development made a real difference. “It was important that I found a company that provided training opportunities and professional development opportunities as I was a recent grad,” she said.

Aideen’s investment in development continues. “My time with Optum has been amazing. I’ve had professional and personal growth over the past three years,” she adds.

Aideen also points to the people around her: “I’ve been surrounded by supportive colleagues who have guided and encouraged me from day one.”

Leveraging innovative tools for internal mobility

For our team members, learning and internal mobility go hand in hand. Skills built through courses, real-world projects and custom learning and development tools can help you explore what’s next.

To support internal mobility, the employee Career Center offers tools, resources and guidance designed to help build skills with intention. From webinars and self-guided resources to career exploration support, it helps team members identify strengths, understand growth areas and take meaningful steps toward their next opportunity.

“The Career Center team and the tools they provide are outstanding. They offer a strong foundation for personal and professional development across the organization.”

Sujata experienced this firsthand when she explored an internal mobility tool available to all employees. It helped her see how her current skills aligned with open roles — and where she could grow.

Her exploration started with a simple prompt: “Start discovering.”

“I was amazed to see a role that was a perfect fit — and now I’m in the role I was looking for.”

Building what’s next, together

Across our technology teams, collaboration and innovation play a key role in professional and personal development.

Aideen described regular brainstorming sessions that encourage idea‑sharing and experimentation, as well as broader programs like innovation forums that support creative thinking.

This environment helps employees learn from one another while working on solutions that matter.

Our technology careers are built through learning, supported by mobility, and strengthened by teams who want to see each other succeed.
