Context
In 2023, Optum Rx partnered with FAMU to introduce a scholarship program to support 17 students in the school’s College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Institute of Public Health.
Why it matters
The program aims to increase diverse representation in the pharmacy field and address the ongoing pharmacist shortage while emphasizing the importance of culturally relevant care, ensuring that future pharmacists are equipped to understand and meet the needs of the communities they serve.

What they’re saying
“Before being awarded this scholarship, I worked two jobs to support myself, often dividing my focus and energy. Thanks to the support of the Optum Rx scholarship, I was able to step back from one of my jobs, allowing me to concentrate more fully on my studies and personal growth. This scholarship not only eased my financial burden but also allowed me to pursue my academic goals with greater confidence and dedication.” – George Hunt II, third-year student
“As an out-of-state student, the costs associated with tuition and living expenses have always been a significant challenge, but this scholarship has relieved much of that financial stress, allowing me to focus more on my studies and make the most of my time at Florida A&M University. I am incredibly grateful for the opportunities this scholarship has provided, making my pursuit of higher education more attainable and rewarding.” – Kalyn Pickens, fourth-year student
"The Optum Rx scholarship has significantly impacted our learners' lives by alleviating financial stress, allowing them to focus more on their studies and pursue their desired academic paths. Essentially, it has changed the trajectory of their pharmacy school experience by providing access to higher education that might otherwise be out of reach or unattainable. We know these scholarships will continue to open doors to career opportunities and community engagement, leading to well-rounded learners and future Pharm.Ds." – Darice E. Richard-Mitchell, director of experiential education programs, FAMU College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Institute of Public Health
The big picture
From alleviating financial pressures to creating new opportunities, the influence of these scholarships has been truly transformative for these students and their studies.
"The pharmacy and local pharmacists play a crucial role in supporting people's health,” says Corey Coleman, vice president of health equity business enablement at UnitedHealth Group. “This is why Optum Rx remains committed to supporting the needs of retail and independent pharmacies through initiatives that foster a robust pipeline of health care workers. Additionally, care provided by culturally competent clinicians who understand diverse languages, beliefs and attitudes helps build trusting relationships between patients and providers, ultimately reducing disparities in health conditions, experiences and outcomes."
Looking ahead
Optum Rx continues to work with FAMU, along with exploring additional partnerships with other educational institutions, to drive equitable provider care at the pharmacy.
The scholarship program is just one initiative that supports community and independent pharmacy. Optum Rx remains committed to these vital pharmacies.
